Cleaning up an Amazon Fire TV

· 2 min read

By manufacturer

Fire OS is Android underneath, so ADB works. What changes is everything on top: Amazon replaces the launcher, the store and much of the services layer.

Enabling debugging

On a Fire TV the path is different:

Settings → My Fire TV → Developer options → ADB debugging

On recent models you first have to unlock that menu by pressing seven times on Settings → My Fire TV → About → Device name.

What to look for

adb shell pm list packages | grep -i amazon

You will see a great many. Amazon spreads its software across dozens of small packages, which makes it easier to break something by accident than on a normal Android TV.

The Fire OS specific problem

The Fire TV home screen is advertising by design. It is not an optional layer on top of the system: it is the system. Removing the packages that generate it usually leaves the device with no usable interface.

So on a Fire TV the strategy that works is not uninstalling the launcher but replacing it: installing an alternative and setting it to start instead. It is more work and less final, and it does not leave you staring at a blank screen.

What does come off without drama

A commercial note, not a technical one

Amazon sells Fire TVs cheaply because the business is in what they do after selling them. Removing advertising from a Fire TV is working against the device's business model, and Amazon has made it harder with each version.

If you want a clean device and have not spent the money yet, buying something else is more sensible than fighting this.

What we do not do

We document no method for gaining privileged access on Fire OS or modifying its firmware. The line is here.

Everything here applies to a device you own, and every removal is reversible. The limits of this project: What we do and do not do
